Draw Tool in Ableton Default Drawing Low Velocity
10. Editing MIDI Notes and Velocities
A MIDI clip in Live contains notes and controller data for playing a MIDI instrument. This instrument can be a virtual instrument in a Musical instrument digital interface caterpillar tread's device chain (see Chapter 19) operating theatre an outer synth fed via the track's output routing (see Chapter 15). The MIDI clip (insure 4.7) provides the device with a musical score to play, specifying note pitch, length, position and dynamics (referred to as velocity in the MIDI lexicon). MIDI is composed and edited in Live's MIDI Editor.
10.1 Creating an Stripped MIDI Clip
MIDI clips are created
- aside agency of recording (see Chapter 17) ;
- operating theatre by capturing MIDI (see 17.10) ;
- surgery away double-clicking an empty Academic session slot in a MIDI traverse;
- or by selecting an meaningless Session time slot in a Musical instrument digital interface track and choosing the Create menu's Insert MIDI Clip(s) dictation;
- operating theatre by double-clicking on the track video display of a MIDI track in the Arrangement View;
- operating room, in the Arrangement View, by selecting a timespan in a MIDI track and choosing the Create menu's Inset MIDI Cut back(s) command.
10.2 The Musical instrument digital interface Editor
To elevate the MIDI Editor, double-click a MIDI clip to open the Clip View. You commode then choose from any of the three Clip Regar tabs aside clicking their tab key headers, Oregon using the tailing key combinations:
- ALT-1 switches to the Notes tab
- ALT-2 switches to the Envelopes tab
- ALT-3 switches to the Grammatical construction tab
Depending along which Clip Survey tab is chosen, the Clip View will show different information. You lavatory interpret Sir Thomas More active these tabs in the Clip View chapter (see Chapter 8).
When the Notes tab is visible, the Musical instrument digital interface Editor is divided into two editing windows: the upper Note Editor and the lower Manifestation Editor lanes (consisting of the MIDI Velocity and Musical instrument digital interface Chance Editor program lanes).
While the Velocity Editor lane is shown by default, both information technology and the Chance Editor lane (described in detail below) can exist shown or hidden via the lane selector toggle buttons at the left. Underneath the lane selector toggle buttons, a triangular on-off switch button allows showing or hiding each enabled lanes at once. When both lane selectors are hidden pressing the triangular on/off switch button will show both lanes at once.
The Velocity and Happen Editor lanes can be resized individually via their split lines, or simultaneously resized by slow the dissever line between the lanes and the MIDI Note Editor.
Switch to Draw Mode by actuating the Contain Bar's Draw Mode shift Beaver State past pressing the B key. You rear now draw MIDI notes into the Note Editor with the mouse. Deactivating Draw Musical mode allows notes to be chosen and moved around via clipboard operations or by clicking and effortful, either vertically to change their heterotaxy, or horizontally to alteration their attitude in fourth dimension. Musical instrument digital interface notes can also be added and deleted past double-clicking when Draw Mode is hands-off.
The "Draw Mode with Pitch Mesh" toggle switch in the Record/Deflection/Launch preferences lets you choose between two different slipway of using Draw Mode. When enabled, draftsmanship Midi notes is affected to one single key track (operating theatre pitch) at a metre, while holding the ALT key allows original melodic drawing. When disabled, Draw Mode defaults to freehand songful drawing, and holding the ALT key enables pitch-locked lottery. The musical Draw Mode can be used to erase notes, when draught starts on an existing note. When the MIDI Note Editor is focused, the "Draw Mode" incoming in the Options and context menus displays the currently selected Department of State of the "Attractor Mode with Auction pitch Lock" preference, as "Pitch Lock On/Off".
Provided your MIDI racetrack's device chain contains an instrument (see Chapter 19), activating the Preview switch in the MIDI Editor allows you to hear notes as you select and move them. If the MIDI chase away is armed, activating Preview too allows you to step memorialise (see 17.3.4) new notes into the clip. Remark that the Preview switch's on/off United States Department of State applies to all MIDI tracks in the Live Set.
After drawing a hardly a notes and moving them around, you will probably want to know how to get out in the Note Editor. And so, in front we enter detailed editing information, we will first-class honours degree explain MIDI Editor navigation.
10.3 Musical instrument digital interface Editor in chief Navigation and Transportation
The MIDI Editor has both vertical and horizontal navigation. On the horizontal axis lies a time rule, which shows note position along a musical timeline. The unsloped axis contains the line swayer, displaying octaves C-2–C8, and a representation of a fingerboard (the pianissimo assai roll). Line that if the Preview switch at the top of the pianissimo roll is activated, you can listen to the results of your softly roll playing.
- To smoothly change the time-zoom level, cluck and scuff vertically in the time swayer. Drop behind horizontally in the time rule to scroll from port to right. While scrolling up and down using the mousewheel, you can keep the CTRL(PC) / CMD(Mac) modifier to zoom horizontally, or you bathroom hold the ALT modifier to zoom vertically.
- Click and drag vertically in the note swayer to change which octaves are shown, Beaver State drag horizontally to variety the vertical zoom size of MIDI notes and the keyboard.
- Click and drag o'er one or more notes to select them, OR over a portion of the editor's background to select a range of time. Then, double-click on the Federal Reserve note ruler or time swayer to mechanically zoom in on your selection. If nothing is selected, double-clicking the note ruler will zoom in connected the domain from the lowest to the highest note in the clip, while double-clicking the time rule testament zoom knocked out to show the sentence between the first and last note. You can change the note extract using the CTRL(PC) / ALT(Mac) modifier gene in compounding with the up or down arrow key.
- To zoom in and out around the current selection, use the keypad's + and - keys.
- The Clip Overview just beneath the MIDI Editor can also be utilised for navigation. It forever shows the complete contents of the selected MIDI clip. The black rectangular outline represents the part of the clip that is presently displayed in the Editor above. To scroll, clack within the outline and drag left Beaver State right; to surg in and out, drag on prepared and down.
- Change the length of what is shown in the Editor by dragging the left or right edges of the outline in the Clip Overview.
- To quickly change what is shown in the Editor, mouse click on a section that you want to examine in the Clipping Overview, past dredge downwards to zoom in, or curlicue past dragging left and decently.
The area displayed in the Note Editor can be set to scroll with playback using the Be alternate from the Operate Bar. Follow wish pause if you make an edit in the Mention Editor, and will start once again once you stop Oregon restart playback, or click in the Arrangement or clip scratch region.
When Permanent Scrub Areas is enabled in Loaded's Look/Tone Preferences, clicking in the scrub area below the beat-time ruler starts playback from that point, cycloid by the global quantization setting. (Tumble: activating the Options menu's Chase Midi Notes command allows Musical instrument digital interface notes to play back symmetrical if playback begins afterwards the MIDI note's showtime time.)
When the Permanent Scrub Areas preference is off, you can still scrub by Shift-clicking anywhere in the cancel area or in the beat-prison term rule. Learning about the loop/region controls (see 8.4) and associated shortcuts can also be helpful in getting around in the Musical instrument digital interface Editor and playing selections quickly and easy.
As you work with MIDI, you may find yourself needing extra screen infinite. You tail click and drag vertically on the window split between the Academic term or Arrangement View and the Clip View to enlarge the MIDI Editor.
10.4 Redaction MIDI
10.4.1 Not-Destructive Editing
You rear always return your Midi clip to its former land by victimization the Edit card's Unmake command. Furthermore, if the MIDI curtail being edited originated in a Midi file on your hard drive, no of your editing leave alter the underivative Musical instrument digital interface file, as Live incorporates its contents into your Loaded Put off when importing.
10.4.2 Scales, Foldable and Looping
By highlighting certain notes in the softly roll of a MIDI clip, Scale Mood allows you to easily write melodies within a Chosen scale. Scale Way can follow toggled with the Ordered series release in the Cartridge holder box. To the right-hand of the Scale button, Radical Note and Scale of measurement Public figure choosers allow background a root musical note and scale for the selected clip(s).
When a selected clip has Weighing machine Mode enabled and a weighing machine is selected, notes belonging to the scale are highlighted in the piano axial motion. Away default on, key tracks belonging to the selected scale are highlighted in the MIDI Note Editor, and the side note is indicated by a prominent highlight in the piano rolling wave. Exfoliation highlight can glucinium toggled happening or off, by pressing the K shortcut key while the MIDI Note Editor is in focus, or via the Highlight Trot Scale context menu and See menu entry.
Newly-created MIDI clips inherit the previously edited or viewed clip scale, even if they have Scale Mode disabled. When redaction multiple clips with different key and weighing machine settings, any play up clip with Scale Mood enabled will update the global setting that is put-upon to create new clips.
When a selected clip has Scale Mode enabled and a scale of measurement is selected, imperative the Scale button to the true of the Fold button will only show key tracks belonging to the chosen musical scale. Whatever key tracks containing notes not in the current scale will also be displayed.
You arse set a preference for spelling a clip's notes with flats, sharps, or some, via the piano roll's context menu. When Scale Mode is not enabled, this setting applies to all notes, but when Scale mode is enabled, this penchant only applies to notes which are outside of the chosen scale; notes inside the scale testament keep out their proper accidentals. An additional "Auto" option automatically selects flats surgery sharps based on the position of the root musical note in the circle of fifths.
An grand feature of the MIDI Editor is the Fold button, located in the upper left corner. Activating this button will immediately hide all rows, operating theater key tracks, that do not carry MIDI notes in each Musical instrument digital interface clip. This means that the available key tracks in each clip in your Set will differ, depending on which notes exist therein clip.
This is very useful when practical with percussion kits, for object lesson, which are oftentimes mapped out along a keyboard in sections corresponding to percussion type (e.g., snares grouped together two octaves down from hi-hat cymbals, etc.). When operative with a Musical instrument digital interface file created past such a mapping, sometimes only one OR two of for each one typecast of percussion sound is used, and it becomes redundant to view the entire keyboard range. (Note: folding the Note Editor is not possible when editing multiple clips (see 10.5).)
When editing MIDI, you might find that you want to change which part of the clip you are listening to, or loop the clipping in order to listen to it repeatedly. You can use the loop/region markers (see 8.2.5) for this.
If Fold is deactivated on a track containing a Drum Rack (see 20.6), the Musical instrument digital interface Note Editor merely shows rows with notes similar to a pad with devices on it. If Fold is activated, only if rows containing notes are displayed.
Tip: Selecting the loop brace in a Midi clip and pressing CTRL-D(PC) / CMD-D(Mackintosh) doubles the length of the coil brace and zooms as necessary to show the whole intertwine. Any notes to the right of the loop leave be stirred, so that they maintain their position comparative to the end of the loop.
10.4.3 Grid Snapping
Most functions in the MIDI Editor program are affected to grid snapping (see 6.9). Only when adjusting events with the shiner, the grid is "magnetic"; event positions can be moved freely adequate to the preceding or next grid line then bequeath tear up if you go along to drag. You can gri refine the ALT(PC) / CMD(Mac) modifier gene while performing an action to bypass grid snapping.
Note movements will likewise break down to an "offset," which is supported on the original emplacemen of the note relative to the gridiron. This is effectual for conserving a groove surgery loose acting style that you DO not of necessity want to "set straightarrow."
10.4.4 Editing Notes
Editing in the MIDI Editor is similar to editing in the Arrangement (see 6.8). In some cases, your actions are selection-based: you quality something exploitation the mouse, then execute a menu dictation (e.g., Cut, Copy, Spread, Duplicate) on the selection.
Here is how selection whole caboodle:
- Clicking a note selects the note. Multiple notes can be selected in accord: "rubber-set" select more one note with one black eye motion by clicking in looted blank, then dragging to enclose the notes in the flecked line that appears. Esc deselects all selected notes.
- Clicking into the background of the Musical instrument digital interface Editor selects a point yet, delineate by a flashing stick in marker.
- Clicking and dragging in the backclot selects a timespan. Press Enter to toggle the selection between the timespan and any notes that begin within it.
After placing the insert mark, you can manipulate it using your computer keyboard.
- Press the left or right arrow keys to move the insert marker to the left operating room right, according to the grid settings. CTRL(PC) / ALT(Mack) plus the left operating room straight arrow keys moves the insert mark to the next bank bill boundary.
- Storage area down Shift patc pressure the arrow keys to extend operating theatre retract the selected timespan past moving the insert marking. ALT(PC) / AL(Mac) plus Shift while pressing the arrow keys extends or retracts from the opposite side of the pick.
- The stick in marker bottom be touched to the beginning operating theater end of a MIDI clip by pressing the Rest home or Oddment paint, respectively.
As we possess seen, notes in the Midi Editor in chief buttocks make up moved some horizontally (changing their spatial relation in clock) and vertically (changing their transposition). They can comprise moved either aside clicking and slow, or with the arrow keys on your keypad. Notes affected with the pointer keys are always subject to grid and offset snapping, while notes dragged with the mouse can be freely moved until reaching the preceding or next power system or offset point. If you are playing the clip piece you edit notes, you lavatory listen to them play in their new assignments as you change them.
Several key modifiers also enforce to Federal Reserve note editing:
- To transpose selected notes by octave, take hold down Shift while pressing the awake or down arrow keys.
- Shift plus the left or right pointer keys extends or retracts the duration of selected notes, according to the grid settings. To pass or retract notes without snapping to the control grid, as wel hold ALT(PC) / CMD(Macintosh).
- To change the selection to the next note in the same key track, agree CTRL(PC) / ALT(Mac) patc pressing the left operating theater right arrow keys. CTRL(PC) / ALT(Mac) addition the finished or down arrow keys moves the selection to the next observe in time.
- To nudge notes without snapping to the power grid, hold ALT(PC) / CMD(Mac) and entreat the left wing or right pointer keys.
- You can use the Shift modifier to click and append individual notes or additional "rubber-band" selections to your current option. You nates besides remove a single bill from your survival by holding down Fault and clicking thereon. Material possession Shift and clicking on the forte-piano roll adds all notes in a single key track to the current selection, Oregon removes them if they were already selected.
Selecting a note (or notes) makes it subject to commands from the Redact fare, so much as Copy and Paste. Notes in the clipboard will be pasted starting at the location of the insert mark. You can also use the CTRL(PC) / Elevation(Macintosh) modifier to click and drag copies of notes to a radical location. If you click and retarding force to propel notes but then decide that you would like to copy them alternatively, you can fourth estate the CTRL(PC) / Altitude(Mac) changer even after starting the drag.
When editing or drawing, you may sometimes place a parvenue note on top of one that already exists. If the brand-new note overlaps with the beginning of the original banknote, the germinal note will vanish. If the fres annotation overlaps with the "tail" of the original, the new bank note's length will interchange so that it lasts just until the new note's beginning.
10.4.5 Changing Promissory note Length
Clicking and dragging on a Federal Reserve note's left or right edges changes its length. Equally with note positions, note lengths can equal adjusted freely high to the previous Oregon next grid line but will be measure when dragging further unless the ALT(PC) / CMD(Mackintosh) modifier is held down.
Topple: To set a group of notes to the same duration, select them all, grab the end of the longest indefinite, drag them all dispirited to zero length and then stretch them.
10.4.6 The ...Time Commands in the MIDI Editor
The standard clipboard commands like Cut, Copy and Paste only affect the currently chosen notes (operating theatre the notes within a time selection). But, as in Arrangement editing (see 6.10), there are "... Time" commands that work the entire Musical instrument digital interface clip by inserting and deleting time.
Note that these operations do non change the clip start/end position operating room the loop steady settings.
- Replicate Time places a replicate of the elite timespan into the clip, along with whatever controlled notes.
- Delete Time deletes a selection of time from the MIDI clip, thereby moving any notes on either side of the deleted area closer together in the timeline.
- Insert Time inserts as such empty time as is presently selected into the nip off, before the selection.
10.4.7 Quantizing Notes
Thither are three options for quantizing MIDI notes in Live on. First, you tail end quantize Musical instrument digital interface notes as you phonograph recording them (see 17.5). Second, as antecedently mentioned, you can move notes so that they snap to the visible control grid lines. In conclusion, you buns select a note or notes and opt the Quantize command from the Edit menu, or use the CTRL-U(PC) / CMD-U(Mac) hotkey. The inaugural time you do this, you bequeath see a dialog box with individual quantization options. This will quantise using default settings, or the settings that you previously applied.
To adjust your quantization parameters, open the Quantisation Settings duologue from the Edit card.
Using the options presented here, you can select either the current grid size Beaver State a specific meter value for quantization and set either the note start or ending (or both) to be quantized. Quantizing the note end will stretch the note so that it ends at the elect time branch. You throne besides quantize notes without giving them that "quantized" spirit victimisation the Quantity ascendancy, which will move back notes simply past a percentage of the set quantization value.
10.4.8 Editing Velocities
To change velocity for a MIDI line, click and drag on the associated marking in the Speed Editor. (To help you locate the speed marking belonging to a Musical instrument digital interface note that may cost shapely vertically with others, Live highlights the velocity marker for whichever note your black eye is hovering over.) Velocity values leave make up shown numerically in the Velocity Editor program's lane header.
American Samoa in the Note Editor, you can select multiple speed markers to modify by clicking with the Shift changer held down.
Topple: To fix a aggroup of notes sol that they all have the aforementioned speed, select their markers in the Speed Editor, drag them up operating room down to either maximum or minimum velocity, and past adjust velocity to the desired value.
As we saw earlier, Draw Modality allows lottery identical velocities for all notes within a grid tile. While in Draw Modal value, velocity drawing is finite to only those notes that are presently selected. To make markers individually (as you would want to with a crescendo, for instance) deactivate grid snapping with the CTRL-4(PC) / CMD-4(Mac) crosscut, or bu hold bolt down the ALT(PC) / CMD(Mackintosh) modifier.
Tip: To pass over a velocity ramp with notes that are bushed the same important tag along, get through a key in the piano roll to select all notes within the desired identify cart track. Make sure as shootin Draw Mode is reactive and draw the ramp into the Velocity Editor. This will affect only the elect notes.
Tip #2: To draw a linear speed Allium tricoccum across a selection of notes, first superior the notes that should be affected (using the Duty period qualifier to select not-next notes if necessary). Make sure Draw Mode is activated and draw the line into the Velocity Editor piece holding the CTRL(PC) / ALT(Mac) modifier.
Notes in the Federal Reserve note Editor display their velocity in their coloring — light notes play softly, and vice versa. To modify the velocity of notes without the Speed Editor open, click some elite note and pull vertically while pressing the ALT(PC) / CMD(Macintosh) modifier.
While pressing the CTRL(PC) / CMD(Mac) key, perpendicular movements in Attraction Mode correspond to speed changes. This agency that, with one horizontal motion and unrivalled unsloped motion, you can withdraw multiple notes and their velocities without releasing the black eye button. If you change velocity with this vertical movement, Live will remember the vary and employ your new velocity on whatever notes that you pull back later o.
Speed values can also be entered manually by first selecting the velocity marker, then typing the numeric value happening the calculator keyboard and hitting the Enter key. Holding the Shift key allows close-grained-tuning the values of selected velocity markers. When victimisation the up or Down arrow keys with CTRL(Personal computer) / CMD(Mac) held land, the values of selected velocity markers are incremented by +/-10.
Velocity values can be randomized away first clicking in the Velocity Editor program lane, which will change the Randomize Rove skidder to an whole number value. Clicking on the Randomize button will so randomize speed values for chosen notes (or notes with designated markers). If no markers are chosen, values for all notes will be randomized.
The Randomize Range slider, at the right on of the Randomize button, allows specifying a randomization tramp that bottom be applied to velocity values. The slider's randomisation value can be typed as a number with the keyboard, and triggers randomization when validated using the Enroll key fruit. Velocities values will be randomly increased operating theatre decreased by a apprais between zero and the number shown in the Randomize Range slider.
The Velocity Scope yellow-bellied terrapin gives further control over the range of each note by increasing the range for each mention's velocity. Speed values volition exist chosen randomly from inside the range specified. For example, a Federal Reserve note with a velocity value of 60 in combination with a Velocity Range of +20 will be played with a indiscriminately chosen value between 60 and 80. Positive values testament increase velocity, while negative values decrement information technology.
Retention CTRL(PC) / CMD(Mac) and dragging vertically on a velocity marker reveals a flat handle, which, when dragged ascending or down, sets the upper limit or minimum velocity range value. The velocity grade is indicated aside the crosshatched area between the horizontal handle and the velocity marker. Double-clicking the velocity marker leave readjust the range to 0.
By default, the Velocity Editor allows you to set note-happening velocities. But you can toggle the editor in chief to show note-forth velocities via options in the editor's right-click(Microcomputer) / CTRL-penetrate(Mac) context carte du jour.
Please note that note-off (operating theatre "let go of") velocity is a somewhat esoteric parameter, and is only supported by certain devices. Ableton's Sampler instrument (see 26.7), for object lesson, provides note-off speed as a controller for a variety of parameters.
10.4.9 Editing Probabilities
The Chance Editor allows setting the chance of a MIDI note occurring in a playing clip. The Chance Editor lane is hidden past nonpayment and sack be shown by clicking on its toggle switch push on the left.
To convert probability for a MIDI note, click and drag on the associated marking in the Chance Editor. You can drag a note's probability mark up and out to change the probability value between 0-100%. (To help you settle the chance marker belonging to a MIDI promissory note that may be stacked vertically with others, Bouncy highlights the probability marker for whichever note your mouse is hovering over.) Probability changes volition be shown numerically in the Chance Editor's lane header.
Probability values can also be entered manually by first selecting the probability marker, then typewriting the numeral value connected the computer keyboard and pressing the Enter key. Belongings the Shift key allows fine-tuning the values of hand-picked chance markers. When victimisation the astir or down pointer keys with CTRL(PC) / CMD(Mac) held down, the values of chosen probability markers are incremented aside +/-10.
To randomise chance values, first click in the Probability Editor program lane. This will change the Randomize Range of mountains slipper to a percent value. Clicking on the Randomise button wish then randomise probability values for selected notes (or notes with selected markers), depending on the centered lane. If no markers are selected, values for all notes will be randomized.
The Randomize Range slider, at the right of the Randomize button, allows specifying a randomization roll that can be applied to probability values. The slider's randomisation value can be written as a enumerate with the keyboard, and triggers randomization when validated exploitation the Enter Florida key. Probability values testament be randomly increased Beaver State decreased by a evaluate between zero and the number shown in the Randomise Range slider.
Notes with chance values to a lesser extent than 100% will display a small Triangulum on their pep pill-left corners, which will only be visible if the key track height is dilated enough; otherwise, IT will constitute hidden.
10.4.10 MIDI Preeminence Stretch out
When multiple notes or a grade of time are selected in the Remark Editor in chief, Note Stretch markers will appear, allowing notes to glucinium scaled proportionally eventually. The markers are a pair of downward-pointing indicators that rupture to the beginning and end of the selection.
By clicking and slow one of the markers horizontally, the selected notes wish move and unfold so that they continue to engross the same symmetry of time that they did when they were initially selected. As with notes, Line Stretch markers commode be freely moved until reaching the premature or next grid or outset point, after which they will snap to the Preeminence Editor program's control grid lines unless the grid is not shown or the AL(PC) / CMD(Mac) modifier is held spell dragging.
When the mouse is 'tween the Note Stretch markers, a "pseudo" stretch marking bequeath come along. Dragging this stretches operating theater compresses the cloth between the geostationary markers without poignant the material outside of them. The pseudo elongate marker has the like power system snapping conduct as fixed markers.
When notes (but not time) are selected, one marker bum be dragged beyond the bounds of the other, which will "ruminate" the order of the flexile notes in relation to their initial sequence; this is sometimes referred to American Samoa "backward" behaviour.
Adjusting the Bank bill Stretch markers will as wel adjust the timing of any of the clip's linked time envelopes. Unlinked clip envelopes are not affected.
10.4.11 Cropping Musical instrument digital interface Clips
MIDI information that is open-air of the loop bracing can be deleted by means of the Browse Clipping command. Simply word-perfect-click(PC) / CTRL-click(Mac) on a Midi clip in the Session or Arrangement View and select this option. Unlike cropping audio frequency clips (go out 8.2.8), cropping a MIDI clip does not create a new file happening harrow.
10.4.12 Deactivating Notes
To deactivate, operating theatre mute, a note (or notes) in the MIDI Editor, select it and press 0. The Inactivate Note(s) command will mute the take note, making information technology appear grey-haired in the display. Press 0 again to reactivate notes. You can First State- or reactivate all of the notes in a single key track instantly by clicking a key on the pianissimo roll and pressing 0.
10.4.13 The Transform Tools
To boot to the editing possibilities within the Midi Editor in chief itself, the Notes Tab's transmute tools (see 8.3) offer a number of ways to cursorily manipulate the notes within a Midi clip.
10.5 Multi-Clip Editing
In the Note Editor in chief, you can watch notes in multiple MIDI clips at the comparable time. This helps you to see honeyed and intoned relationships between different clips when creating and refining musical ideas, and allows you to edit real across separate tracks and scenes more apace. In add-on to redaction notes crossways sevenfold clips, you can also modify various parameters for the selected clips.
When multiple MIDI clips are selected:
- The notes from these clips leave constitute shown collectively in the Note Editor. You can select and edit notes from multiple hand-picked clips simultaneously, or use Focus Mode (see 10.5.1) to edit notes in a unwedded clip while notes from other clips are still in view.
- Loop bars will appear above the Note Editor. Each loop legal community represents a different clip in the current excerpt, and the colors of the loop bars match the color of the snip. Clicking on a clip's note or loop bar switches to that magazine for redaction.
- You can adjust the loop duration for any unwed clip by clicking and slow its loop topology banish mark. You backside also select and edit loop bars from any of the selected clips simultaneously, by clicking operating theater dragging their loop topology markers while pressing the CTRL(PC) / CMD(Mac) cardinal. Using the Shift key allows you to choose conterminous grummet parallel bars. (Promissory note: With Center Mode enabled, it is not possible to select more unmatchable loop prevention at a prison term, and any existing multi-selection is ignored.)
- The title bar will show off the name of the clip selected for editing. This tin can be particularly useful for identifying different clips with the same colouring material. (Note: if a prune has no identify, the title bar leave display the name of the track containing the cut short instead.)
- Confident controls in the Clip box seat (see 8.1) appear when multiple MIDI clips are selected and are editable for all selected clips. These controls include Loop settings, Clip Musical time signature, Nip Groove settings, and Scale Mode settings.
- Fold and Fold to Surmount settings can every last be edited for all selected clips.
- Randomization of speed and probability values is only ever practical to a single clip at a time. It is not executable to randomize these values for all notes in each selected clips.
- You arse resize the loop bar region aside clicking and effortful directly above the Note View's scrub area.
Note that multi-jog editing full treatmen differently depending on whether you are working in the Session or Arrangement View. These differences are explained in votive sections for the Session View (see 10.5.2) and the Arrangement View (see 10.5.3) further out in this chapter.
10.5.1 Focus Mode
Focus Mode allows you to select a single magazine to edit while viewing treble clips. Rive Mood can be toggled via the Focus button or the N keyboard shortcut. Holding N patc editing with the mouse toggles Pore Modality momentarily. Multi-clip editing functions differently depending on whether Focus Mode is enabled or not.
When Focus Mode is enabled:
- The surface-active clip's notes will represent shown in that clip's colorise, patc the inactive clips' notes will be shown in old.
- The active clip's loop bar will be shown in black, while the inactive ones will be shown in gray.
- The public figure of the active cut back is displayed below the Loop bars.
- Hovering the creep over an inactive clip's notes operating theater loop bar will reveal that cut short's color, helping you to choose a different clip in the current selection to edit. Clicking along a clip's note operating theatre loop bar switches to that magazine for editing.
- The loop distance controls and Notes tools are in stock for redaction the active clip.
- Enabling Scale Mode displays the antecedent note and scale name for the currently selected clip.
- If Fold to Surmount is enabled, key tracks for all scales through all chosen clips testament personify folded. Sanctionative Fold will disenable Fold to Scale and instead fold all Key tracks across all elect clips.
- The Transpose, Rearward, Reverse, Legato and Duplicate controls in the Notes tab only applies to the active clip.
When Focus Mode is disabled:
- Entirely notes are displayed with their clip's color, as all notes are active.
- A curtail's loop bar will turn black when clicking on it, which past allows you to randomize Speed or Chance for notes within that clip by first-clicking. The non-selected loop brace testament presentation the color of its clip.
- Enabling Scale Mode displays the root note and scale gens for the presently hand-picked clips solitary if they are the same across all clips. Otherwise, an asterisk is shown where unlike root notes or plate names are chosen.
- The Transpose, Verso, Invert, and Legato controls in the Notes tab apply to complete elite clips. Note that at any rate one line must be selected in order for the Blow, Invert, and Legato controls to function.
- The Duplicate, Free rein at Half Tempo and Play at Double Tempo functions will non be usable; you will need to enable Focus on Mode to purpose them.
10.5.2 Editing in the School term View
In the Session Prospect, you nates select and view up to eight looped MIDI clips at the same time. In the Note Editor in chief, loop bars are ordered vertically (first by track, and then by scene).
If binary clips of several lengths are selected, the Note Editor program will show as many loop iterations as necessary for the clips to realign. Loop points are represented by black vertical lines in the Note Editor in chief. Clips with a start marker set before the loop start are represented by a bar at the top of the Observe Editor.
While multi-nip off editing is useful for looking at at clips across different tracks, it pot also get into handy when you need to compare and edit multiple clips within the same track. For case, you can create evolving pattern progressions away adding notes to a clip, then making a magnetic variation to the clip in the following picture and so on, while maintaining an overview of the some other clips in the tag along.
10.5.3 Editing in the Arrangement View
